What is a Gift? The Advent Conspiracy

The actual Christmas Day is over. I received some gifts. I gave some gifts. I saw others give and receive gifts.

I saw the reports about shopping for gifts. I was in a few parking lots looking for a gift of a parking place. I even saw empty shelves where gifts had been.

Today, a day or two after the official Christmas Day, I came across an interesting movement called the Advent Conspiracy. It is an interesting approach to remembering the original idea of Christmas giving.

Maybe we give at Christmas, because the wise men gave gifts. Or maybe it is because the gift God gave us in His son is our example of generosity. And maybe it is because someone gives us something so we have to give something back. Whatever the reason, some gifting has become more of a business than a spirit.

The Advent Conspiracy is one, somewhat decentralized, movement to refocus on the giving spirit and less on the business of giving. It isn't too late to become a conspirator, because Advent continues until January 6th, Epiphany, the time when the wise men arrived. The Video below is a simple explanation of what Advent Conspiracy is. It is less than 2 minutes and is only text.

If you would like to read about the Advent season, here is a fairly extensive explanation.
