Using Your Phone Camera For More than Listing Pics

It is a new year. Yea! Re-starting anything is nice.

So, I was at a showing the other day and I had a broker that was "piggy backing" a pre-viewing for one of his clients on to one of my already scheduled showings. He showed up with his digital camera and asked if he could take pics of things that I didn't show in the listing pictures.

Of course being the co-operative professional that I am, and being interested in providing the info that might encourage an offer, I said yes. To the agent's dismay, the storage card on his camera was full. Full of Christmas pictures, or full of New Year recordings, or full of what ever, it didn't matter, he was very frustrated.

I commonly use the camera on my cell phone for listing pics and recording many other things, so I asked if he had a cell phone with a camera. He looked at me blankly and said - of course I do. Then hit himself in the head and said DUH.

I have taught myself to use my camera for everything. Some of my uses have been useful whether you need the picture for real estate or for some other reason.  Some of my most recent uses are:

  • I took a pic of the hard to see model / serial number decal on the back of a tv so I could blow it up and search for a manual online.
  • I took a pic of a water meter in the ground for a final reading so the water department could make out the final bill. I included the pic on the final water reading form that I emailed to the water department.
  • I took a pic of the decal on my daughters car so I could look up the VIN number.
  • I took a pic of the rooms of a home we have listed for sale that the landlord has rented to their business associate - against our strong cautions. It was useful in recording and explaining why we had a hard time showing it with all the unwashed dishes, cat leftovers, unmade beds, and general disarray of the property.
  • I took many pics of the snowstorm we just had for a future blog.
  • I took pics of listings and past sales to send to owners who are out of town to show them that their house made it through the storm.
  • I have taken pics of forms and first meeting disclosures to keep for my records when a copy machine isn't available.
  • I have taken pics of old microfiched plans in the building department.

I'm sure that there are other useful things that can be picturized, but that is all I could think of in this short space. So next time you are tempted to be frustrated about a full storage card on your digital camera, think of your phone. You might be able to salvage the moment.
